Just when the holidays were starting off well... we all gave thanks at home with our families for Thanksgiving. Friday during the evening November 26, 2010 in lovely Portland, Oregon families enjoyed the Christmas tree lighting.
I learned early into the night- as did many other Portlanders- the knowledge of a frightening affair that has surrounded news in my beloved home town of Portland.
First I was SO ticked... I was peeved. Who would want to ruin Christmas? Why?
I love Portland, I love Islam... and people who celebrate Christmas and holiday decorations. After speaking with other Portland leaders, the community gathered at Portland City Hall for a press release.
The Muslim community of Portland categorically and unequivocally condemns acts of terrorism.
We're waiting for due process and all that regarding the allegations about Muhamad Muhamud.
Thanks to Portland Police, and law enforcement for helping to keep our mosques safe.
A special thank you to Mayor Sam Adams, I totally admire him and the community should be meeting with him soon.
Well, the Mosque in Corvallis, was set on fire (click here), but thankfully police saw smoke and called the fire department. This was perhaps the easiest case that the fire investigator has had to state a case of arson.
The Muslim Student Association, and various organizations need to engage in some serious interfaith conversations and engage with the community. We need to support youth to succeed and stay in school.
To my beloved Portland, I love you. You'll always be beautiful to me. The people, the places, the smiling faces, and most of all the kind people who stick up for others... and for freedom, communication and understanding regardless of the alleged action of one person who espouses Islam.
I should be clear that in no way do Muslims support hurting innocent people, and innocent civilians.
