Oregon Law up for a Change: Banning religious dress for over 80 years

The Oregon law banning teachers from wearing religious garb has been a focus of mine for the last six months or so... and we're not done quite yet.

We really loved the response to Hijabi Monologues and there may be a chance for a repeat performance in early February.

It appears speaker Hunt will return to the House and Senate with a repeal to the 1921 law banning Oregon Teachers in public schools from wearing "religious garb".
The Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon plus many interfaith groups, and a few representatives of city officials were present to speak about the current situation.

Here's the skinny:
- The ACLU are the ban's biggest supporters- The American Civil Liberties Union opposes freedom for teachers and Title VII- The US Law protecting against discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, or national origin . They have written and circulated emails stating that delaying on the legislation is necessary. *they requested a delay in 2007 as well**
- Legislation in the Oregon State Senate will need strong bipartisan support
- Groups traveling to Salem with info. provided about speaking with legislator staff.

Title VII: Anti-discrimination law- The US Law protecting against discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, or national origin

The latest Oregonian Article regarding the overturning this 80 year old archaic law created to discriminate against Catholics.

PSU's Daily Vanguard newspaper wrote an article about the Hijabi Monologues.

We're really looking to build a better coalition of varying faiths, and people across Oregon.

The issue is first amendment rights, and free exercise of religion. Teachers should not prosthelytize, and honestly teachers who are Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Wiccen and more understand this and they merely deserve the right to be themselves at work, like The Workplace Religious Freedom Act guarantees all Oregonians- Except Teachers.

The US Department of Justice- The DOJ- has investigated situations such as this in the past, and they are not new to the current crisis in personal freedoms. I'm just saying...

Freedom isn't Free.. but boy I love it... That's a photo of some sisters in DC in a broad based coalition of Muslim Organizations visiting our Congressmen and Women in D.C.
