Today Roqaya Al-Gassra from Bahrain was the hardly spoken of winner of her first two heats in women's 200m sprint. She won her first heat easily with a 22.61 and another 22.74 in her next race. She is, however, racing against some female power athletes from Jamaica and the US. The current world record is 21.34 seconds... that's amazing 200m that's the length of 2 football fields in around 20 seconds.

Roqaya will really have to pick up the pace to keep up with the 3 fastest Jamaicans who are all competing in the semifinals Beijing time 10:04pm Wednesday. That is 5:04am on Wednesday here on the Pacific Coast USA. She's the first hijabi competing that we've seen so far in the mainstream media photos here state-side.
Then again the Jamaican team was probably partying it up in the Olympic Village; after yesterday's performance of the world's fastest man (men's 100m dash)the team has plenty to celebrate. This quick 1 minute clip (with past US Olympian Gail Devers- who looks lovely as always, mashallah)
He made it look easy! ESPN article tells of his last win. Look forward to seeing him in the 200m and bringing another medal for the Jamaican team. The women's finals will certainly bring at least 1 gold medal... if not 2 or 3. The men's 200m finals are scheduled for 22:10pm Wed/ 5:10am here Pacific Coast USA.
Since Bolt Usain's nickname is "lightning bolt", it's accurate to say that lightning has struck the Olympics :)

AND, doesn't Roqaya look adorable in her hijabi track-suit? Yes, I understand that some people are going to say "It's not hijab".. I argue it is. Look at her head, her prettily veiled face. Most of the time she competes in track suits which are plenty non-clingy... just like normally the rest of the athletes probably wear track shorts and t-shirts or tank tops... but today they are sporting racing calliber clothing. So is she... she's then going to go out on some adorable hijabi outfit to relax in. Please cut the sister some slack... we only have a few hijabi Olmpians. She's certainly my pic for a surprise win.
Un article en El Periodico(dot com)esta La atleta bahreiní Al-Gassra corre en Pekín con el pelo cubierto como muestra de su fe musulmana.

Hijab has some characteristics and requirments for it to be Hijab.
one of them is that it is loose fiting and does not shape the body.
this clearly is no tthe case with the bahraini sister.
you can say maybe its a "modern" globalized manifestation of hijab but it from a purely religious discourse in shariah its not hijab.
looking at the pic its not even a modern manifestation of hijab! its a very thin scuba dive suit.
well pin a rose on my nose. It's hijabi five O.
weeee-oooo *can I see your license to wear that miss? Did you know that you were going 22.61 in the 200m dash?*
Are you going to issue a citation mass? Or just let this one slide cuz the sister is trying. Please...
P.S. it is not a scuba hood, in fact it's by the maker of the Burkiki (see previous post). This item is called a Hijood (hijab + hood) and is made by the same Australian lady. She contacted Al-Gassra after the Asian Games and offered to supply her. What's up.. she's going to be a hijabi-sponsored athlete.
Citation ?! for loose fiting?!
read ANY description for hijab in "traditional" scholarship you ll find it.
she s trying of course! but still Hijab is Hijab you cant bend the rules for something not pressing like that.
The Olympics seems a pretty pressing issue. Plus, who's got time to stare (or catch up with her at that speed. There's plenty revealed athletes.
Your opinions, and even that of scholars aside, she is covered. It's pretty obvious she's doing it for her faith.. not to make someone happy. She has shown her faith and how it does not constrain her; she still is respectful in regards to her modesty.
Only God knows our intentions. Allaho Alim.
LOL @ hijab 5-0
